EUSDR Side Event on the 29 October 2013

Impact of the EUSDR on the Black Sea Region in the Field of Intercultural Dialogue: Presentation of a new UNAOC Regional Initiative „Building Bridges between Central Asia and Central Europe through Intercultural Dialogue“

Background:

The Fifth Global Forum of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) took place in Vienna from 26 to 28 February 2013 under the main title “Promoting Responsible Leadership in Diversity and Dialogue” (www.vienna5unaoc.at). Apart from thematic priorities (freedom of religion or belief / education of religious pluralism; media freedom / media diversity; migration / integration) the Vienna Forum set a regional focus on the Danube and Black Sea region, the Southern Caucasus and Central Asia. Furthermore, the Vienna Declaration which was adopted by consensus at the Global Forum “acknowledges the unique opportunity created by the Vienna Forum … to open new avenues for cooperation in the Danube and Black Sea Region, the Southern Caucasus and Central Asia” and “supports … the launch of a regional debate on the Danube and Black Sea Region, the Southern Caucasus and Central Asia”. A session was dedicated to this region comprising speakers from Hungary, Austria, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan as well as from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the Council of Europe (CoE) and the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC). One of the conclusions of the session was to further develop this initiative. As the EU has an interest in stability in the regions neighbouring the Danube countries EUSDR projects can be identified as good practice examples for the new UNAOC Regional Initiative.
